KOHIMA: In a significant political shift, a group of National People’s Party (NPP) leaders joined the Congress party in Nagaland today, enhancing the party’s influence in the state.
The group, led by Sudesh Bhagat, NPP’s State Minority Department President, and Jaser Meru, General Secretary of NPYF, included 15 members who officially switched parties at a ceremony held at Congress Bhavan in Dimapur.
Senior leaders of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), such as Yanger Longkumer and L Chuba Yimchunger, were present to welcome the new members into the party. This shift marks a significant development for Congress in the region.
Earlier this year, 15 leaders from the National People’s Party (NPP) joined the Congress party in Nagaland on January 20. These leaders, including former NPP General Secretary, resigned earlier this year to seek new opportunities for growth in their political careers.
They emphasized that their decision was not motivated by personal issues with their former leaders but a desire to progress. At a press conference in Kohima, Congress leader S Supongmeren shared that the group had a discussion with Congress leaders, where they expressed their reasons for joining the party.
NPCC Working President Khriedi Theunuo mentioned that the recognition of Congress’s policies and programs led to their decision. The new members, including former NPP Vice President Bitong Sangtam and General Secretary L. Hiketo Shohe, expressed their belief in Congress’s principles and leadership, both at the regional and national levels, and their hope to contribute to the party’s growth.
