KOHIMA: The much-awaited tripartite talks regarding the formation of Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT) began in New Delhi on December 13. This comes in the wake of the Nagaland government's submission of comments on the draft Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) for the proposed FNT to settle the aspirations of the region.
A 10-member delegation from the Eastern Nagaland Peoples' Organisation, led by its president A. Chingmak Chang, represented the concerns of the people in the region. Key central government representatives, including Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Kumar Deka, and Advisor (NE) A.K. Mishra, participated in the discussions. The Nagaland government was represented by Chief Secretary J. Alam, Additional Chief Secretary & Finance Commissioner, and the Home Commissioner.
This round of talks is crucial because it comes immediately after the Nagaland government has filed its detailed observations and recommendations on the draft MoS. The latter would be expected to play a crucial role in taking the negotiations forward.
The discussions come after a key meeting on November 21 when Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and his deputies met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. There, Shah assured the ENPO that they would be included in talks after the conclusion of the Hornbill Festival, setting the stage for this current round of discussions.
