
GANGTOK: In a significant move to aid Sikkim's recovery from the Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) that struck the Teesta River basin in October 2023, the Central Government has approved a financial package of Rs 555.70 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).
This decision was reached during a meeting of a High-Level Committee (HLC) chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, which included key officials such as the Finance Minister, Agriculture Minister, and the Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog.
The funds set aside are to aid in numerous recovery efforts, such as reconstruction, preparedness, and capacity-building activities in the flood-affected regions of Sikkim. The funding is necessary for the state to utilize in rebuilding and recovering from the widespread destruction brought about by the floods.
In addition to the special allocation for Sikkim, the Central Government has also provided substantial disaster relief funds to multiple states throughout the current financial year. This includes ₹19,074.80 crore allocated to 28 states under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), ₹3,229.35 crore to 16 states through the State Disaster Mitigation Fund (SDMF), and ₹5,160.76 crore to 19 states from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).
The Central Government remains dedicated to enhancing disaster management and mitigation strategies nationwide, ensuring that timely financial support reaches the states affected by natural disasters.
