GANGTOK: In a significant move to bolster Sikkim's connectivity and tourism sector, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang made several important announcements on the final day of the Discover Rabong Cho-Dzo Fest 2025.

The Chief Minister confirmed that the long-awaited railway project connecting Siliguri (Sevok) to Sikkim is on schedule for completion by 2027. The project will enhance access to the state and, therefore, boost tourism and economic activity.

Besides the rail project, CM Tamang also announced proposals for the new Melli-Singtam highway. The project will enhance intra-state connectivity to enable free flow of vehicles in the state.

In addition, maintenance work that is presently ongoing on National Highway 10 (NH10) is proceeding steadily. When the upgrading is completed, the journey between Siliguri and Sikkim is envisioned to be shortened to only two hours. The improvement is likely to be gained by both local and tourist traffic, as it will facilitate easier and more convenient travel.

These infrastructural initiatives form part of the state government's overall strategy to enhance Sikkim's status as a destination for tourism and improve the standard of living among its inhabitants. The moves as announced by the Chief Minister signify a step towards the growth of the transport infrastructure of the state, which is critical to the state's economic development.
