GANGTOK: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang visited the Dzongu demonstration bridge in order to ascertain its load-carrying capacity, amid controversy raised by the opposition over the usage of the bridge. Controversy was heightened after a video surfaced wherein the Chief Minister was seen walking on the bridge. The opposition, especially the Citizen Action Party (CAP), accused the Chief Minister of improper usage.
CM Tamang finally clarified that the bridge was constructed by the Lepcha community and was constructed only as a temporary pedestrian crossing for ensuring emergency access after the 2023 floods. He further stated that the bridge was not constructed for vehicular movement and is made of bamboo, which makes it safer for pedestrian movement.
According to CM Tamang, the government is serious about upgrading the region's infrastructure. A more robust model bridge will soon replace the demonstration bridge to cater to the growing needs of the area, responding to claims of neglect in Dzongu.
The Sikkim government has accomplished much more in rebuilding Dzongu in performing infrastructure improvements such as constructing a steel suspension bridge at Sangkalang that will be completed by April 2025. The health, education, and welfare fronts have been attended to through the opening of necessary services including ambulance service at Hee Gyathang PHC and over 300 houses for the flood-displaced families. At the local level, efforts are also being made in cooperation with the Lepcha community, including special quotas for higher studies and a Lepcha Museum to promote cultural heritage.
