GANGTOK: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang flagged off a distinguished delegation of Buddhist monks from the state this morning for the Prayagraj Mahakumbh Mela 2025. The delegation, consisting of 30 monks and two officials from the Ecclesiastical Department, will be on their pilgrimage until February 7.

The gesture highlights the deep spiritual and cultural connections that unite the state’s diverse traditions. The Chief Minister wished the monks a spiritually fulfilling and meaningful journey as they represent Sikkim’s rich heritage at the event.

Earlier this month, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang had announced that he would attend the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The announcement came after Uttar Pradesh ministers JPS Rathore and Om Prakash Rajbhar visited Tamang at his official residence in Gangtok.

The ministers, in a gesture of goodwill, formally invited Tamang to the Maha Kumbh Mela, a major spiritual event held once every 12 years. The event, scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 26, 2025, is expected to attract around 45 crore devotees from around the world.

The ministers also shared details about the health facilities being set up for the event, including a 100-bed hospital and small ICUs. Tamang expressed his gratitude for the invitation and confirmed that he would attend with a delegation from Sikkim, which would include cultural and spiritual leaders. The ministers also extended the invitation to Governor Om Prakash Mathur.
