GANGTOK: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang inaugurated a newly constructed home for senior citizen Jas Maya Rai in Lower Barfung on Monday. The house was built in response to a request made by Ms. Rai during a public meeting in Jorethang last year, where she highlighted the need for a secure and dignified living environment.

Constructed under the Sikkim Garib Awas Yojana, the home symbolizes the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its people. “This home is a testament to our dedication to uplifting our citizens,” said Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. He added that initiatives like this motivate the government to work with compassion and unwavering dedication to the welfare of the community.

Meanwhile, the previous month, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang launched the National Program for Health Care of the Elderly (NPHCE) on December 14, aiming to improve healthcare services for senior citizens in Sikkim. The event, held at Mintokgang, was attended by Health Minister GT Dhungel.

The NPHCE initiative sought to provide affordable, high-quality healthcare to the elderly. As part of the program, 20-bedded geriatric wards were to be set up at STNM Hospital, along with 10-bedded wards at district hospitals. The initiative also included specialized outpatient departments (OPDs) for elderly care and the distribution of mobility aids, such as spectacles, hearing aids, and wheelchairs.
