Gangtok: The Sikkim senior women's football team, captained by head coach Puspa Gurung, met with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay this morning in Siliguri.
The team is geared up to play for the Raj Mata Juabai Trophy 2024–25 in the final round of the 29th Senior Women’s National Football Championship, which kicks off on December 11 in Narainpur, Chhattisgarh.
As the team and officials engaged with the Chief Minister, they expressed their passion and resolve to represent Sikkim with pride on the international scene.
As an avid football fan, the Chief Minister wished the team well and commended their commitment, encouraging them to maintain their excellent sportsmanship throughout the tournament.
The Sikkim team is carrying the State's hope as the countdown starts, aiming to make a lasting impression on the national football scene.
Recently, the possibility of turning the Himalayan state into a sports hotspot was addressed during a meeting between Sikkim Tourism Minister Tshering T. Bhutia and Gautam Gambhir, the coach of the Indian cricket team. Sikkim has the potential to become a premier destination for sports tourism and related activities," the minister said.
According to a statement released by the sports department, Bhutia met Gambhir in New Delhi. Gambhir pledged to assist the growth of sports nationwide during their conversation, the statement said.
