GANGTOK: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has accused certain forces of hindering the tribal status recognition for 12 left-out communities in the state. He blamed the previous government for submitting inaccurate reports to the Centre, which led to the denial of their demand for tribal status.

During a one-day session of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, Tamang stated that the former government's mistakes had pushed these communities backward, preventing their recognition as Scheduled Tribes.

Tamang informed the House that the current government has already passed a resolution urging the Centre to grant tribal status to these communities. He also mentioned that he has raised the issue multiple times with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

The Chief Minister acknowledged that securing tribal status is a difficult battle and emphasized the need for collaboration between Sikkim and Darjeeling to achieve this goal.

He reminded the assembly that the recognition of the Limboo and Tamang communities as Scheduled Tribes was also a joint effort between the two regions. However, Tamang claimed there are still forces actively opposing the cause, citing an attempt to block the demand during an important meeting in Siliguri.

Despite these challenges, Tamang assured that his government remains committed to securing tribal status for the 12 left-out communities and stressed that making Sikkim a fully tribal state is the ultimate aim.
