GANGTOK: The Sikkim government has made it mandatory for all tourists to pay an entry fee of Rs 50. The new policy was implemented this month under the Sikkim Registration of Tourist Trade Rules, 2025, as a major move by the state to boost its tourism industry.

Officials collect it as an entry charge during hotel check-in. The money is deposited into the Tourism Sustainability Development (TSD) Fund, which has been set up to upgrade tourism-related infrastructure and services throughout the state.

The proposal is supposed to help Sikkim maintain a clean and sustainable tourism experience.

The charge is levied on every tourist except those below the age of five years. It can be used for a stay of 30 days, after which a tourist who comes back to the state has to pay the fee once more.

The initiative is likely to fetch huge revenues, which will be used to improve road connectivity, keep the area clean, and improve various tourism infrastructure.

Authorities have revealed that the collected revenue from the entrance fee will be invested specifically in the creation and upkeep of critical tourism infrastructure. With an emphasis on sustainability, the state seeks to better satisfy visitors while conserving its natural attractions and cultural heritage.

As Sikkim is a popular destination among nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers, the government is optimistic that this move will spur long-term tourism development with the assurance that the resources of the state will be preserved for generations to come.
