AIZAWL: The Mizoram government is mulling over transferring the state's sole airport, Lengpui Airport, situated close to Aizawl, to the Airports Authority of India (AAI), an official said on Friday.

The proposal is being deliberated at the highest government level to decide what is best for the management and operation of the airport.

The Chief Minister of the state, Lalduhoma, had a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently to discuss the issue. Shah put forward the proposal that the state government transfer the airport to AAI.

The Mizoram government then planned to consult the Union Home Ministry and the Civil Aviation Ministry further before finalizing the decision.

In his address to the state assembly on Thursday, Chief Minister Lalduhoma reaffirmed that Shah had introduced the suggestion for handing over Lengpui airport to the AAI. The state government is favoring the handover, and even opposition parties as well as most non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have welcomed the move. This confluence of opinions from political parties as well as social organizations represents a widespread unanimity in supporting the transfer.

Earlier, the state government of Mizoram had been preparing a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to hand over Lengpui Airport to the Indian Air Force (IAF). Opposition parties like the Mizo National Front (MNF), the Congress, and other groups opposed the idea.

According to the opposition, allowing the airport to be given to the IAF may not be good for the state or its population.
