GANGTOK: The Sikkim Premier League (SPL) 2025 officially kicked off on Thursday with a lively opening ceremony at the Bhaichung Stadium in Namchi. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang Golay was the Chief Guest who announced the league formally open.

Organized by the Sports and Youth Affairs Department of the Government of Sikkim in partnership with Football Development Private Limited and the Sikkim Football Association, this season of the SPL features nine teams: Sikkim Aakraman FC, Red Panda FC, Sinolchu FC, Thunderbolt North United, Roaring Leopard FC, Gyalshing United FC, Singling Sporting Club, Sikkim Dragons FC, and Black Eagles SC.

The league is notable for including international players from Brazil, Spain, and various African nations, enhancing the competitive spirit.

At the ceremony, the Chief Minister launched 'Soram,' an energy drink by Sikkim Supreme, which comes in three flavors: Tropical Punch, Salty Citrus, and Spring Burst. Tokens of appreciation were awarded to some of the contributors of the sporting field, including members of Sikkim Football Association and Sikkim Dear Lotteries.

The event also included cultural performances and musical performances by local performers, which helped create a celebratory atmosphere. The first match was between defending champions Singling Sporting Club and Thunderbolt North United, and it ended in a 1–1 draw.

Man of the Match award went to John Kennedy of Singling Sporting Club, and Lakpa Norbu Sherpa of Thunderbolt North United won the Emerging Player of the Match award. The ceremony was attended by prominent officials, franchise owners, and large crowds as a colorful kick-off to the month-long tournament.
