Agartala: The growing defiance in the BJP in Tripura again came into focus when majority of members of the Bokafa Panchayat Samity removed Chairman Sridam Das, a nominee of the party’s State committee, in a no-confidence motion.

The BJP won all the nine seats of the Bokafa Panchayat Samity and nominated Sridam Das as Chairman ignoring objection of majority of the members. They obeyed the party whip but registered their objections. But, their dissidence came into fore within few months.

Vice-Chairman Abhijit Mitra who is also a signatory in the no-confidence motion presided over the session, specially called for the purpose. As per Panchayat Act, the person who is presiding over the meeting and the person against whom the no-confidence has been moved are barred from participating in the voting.

As a result, there were only seven voters in the nine-member Panchayat Samity, out of which five cast their votes in support of the motion while only two stood in support of Chairman Sridam Das.
