Agartala: The process to set up the fifth Border Haat on the India-Bangladesh international border has been initiated in the Sonamura sub-division through the acquisition of land at the Nirbhaypur area in presence of officials of both the sides. This will be the third Border Haat along the Tripura border after Kamalasagar and Srinagar.

The officials identified 5,625 square meters of land at Badarpur under Nirbhoypur village while a similar quantity of land will be acquired at Jagapur under Chouddagram Upa-jela of Bangladesh where the new Border Haat will be located.

Officials of both the countries, including Sonamura SDM Subrata Majumder, Executive Officer of Chouddagram Upajela (Bangladesh) Masud Rana and several others were present during the identification of the land.

Originally, the proposal was to set up the haat at Ghosh Para area but a district official meeting deferred with the proposal considering the uneven land and the threat of erosion by Kankri River. The meeting held on February 26 proposed Badarpur as more suitable and Tuesday’s meeting finalized it.

The proposed Border Haat has created huge enthusiasm among the people as a large number of locals rushed to see the land acquisition work. The border along Sonamura runs through deeply populated areas.
