Agartala: A gang of miscreants had allegedly ransacked the residence of state committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) and secretary of the West Tripura district committee, Pabitra Kar, at Khayerpur on Sunday.

Kar was a senior leader, former deputy speaker of the Tripura assembly and former minister of the previous left front government had alleged that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) backed the miscreants.

Three journalists were also attacked while they were on their way to Khayerpur to cover the incident, namely Prangopal Acharjee, a photographer of 'Syandan Patrika' and two others.

Acharjee later registered a case at Bodhjung Nagar police station.

Kar said that a meeting between the local youths was going on in his house when a gang of miscreants stormed inside the residence.

The five-time MLA had said that "In the attack, more than twenty CPI (M) workers, including women were injured- three of them seriously. They damaged several motorbikes and party vehicles. Three seriously injured persons identified as Shubha Kumar Deb, Ratan Das and Pinak Das were seriously injured and had to be taken to hospital by Fire Brigade vehicles."

The police had immediately rushed to the scene after receiving information about the incident.

"They fled after our workers resisted them but before that, they had injured three of our party workers in front of my house; they also broke many motorbikes and scooters and they also injured one tribal girl; I have already spoken to the senior-most police officers and informed him the matter; the BJP is responsible for the attack and this has been continuing since March 2018," Kar said.

Meanwhile, local BJP leaders had denied the allegation and stated that it was an internal fight between members of the CPI (M).

Besides this, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) later organised a protest rally at Agartala to condemn the attack on their senior party leader.
