AGARTALA: In a notable turn of events on Sunday, Belonia police arrested seven Bangladeshi nationals who were trying to cross illegally into India via Amzadnagar, a border village in South Tripura district.

The group, which is in police custody now, was caught on a tip-off provided to the authorities.

The operation was conducted under the leadership of Officer-in-Charge Shibu Ranjan Dey of Belonia Police Station, according to police sources. The police team moved swiftly on the input of intelligence and intercepted a vehicle at Manur Mukh Tabla Chowmuhani, where the Bangladeshi nationals were on board.

All seven people were arrested along with the driver of the vehicle, Raju Biswas, who has also been arrested for questioning.

During interrogation, the detainees allegedly confessed that they belonged to the Chatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League in Bangladesh. They alleged that they had felt insecure in their native country and crossed over to seek refuge. The group also disclosed that they were aided by an Indian tout, who helped them sneak into Indian territory illegally.

The incident has created security questions along the Indo-Bangladesh border, especially considering the political leanings of the accused persons. Officials have ordered a proper probe to confirm the allegations of the detainees and identify the network involved in cross-border trafficking.
