Agartala: Tripura’s chess prodigy, Arshiya Das, has added another accolade to her impressive list of achievements by winning the prestigious National Youth Icon Award, presented by the High-tech Group of Institutions. The award ceremony took place on Sunday at the Constitution Club of New Delhi to mark National Youth Day, commemorating the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
Arshiya was unable to personally receive the award given to the Indian Chess Association's office bearers because she was in Goa for a chess tournament.
The National Youth Icon Awards are presented annually to recognize exceptional achievements by young individuals in various fields. Arshiya was honored for her outstanding accomplishments in chess under the sports category.
This year, a total of 30 talented youths from across the country, including Arshiya, were conferred with the award.
Union Minister for Tribal Welfare Joel Oram, along with other dignitaries, presided over the ceremony.
Recently, IM Mayank Chakraborty won the SPS Guwahati Rating Open 2024, scoring 8.5/10 and securing the top spot via tie-breaks. Organized by the Assam Chess Club from December 25–30, the tournament featured 374 players, including three IMs, competing in a 10-round Swiss format.
Mayank remained undefeated, claiming ₹100,000 and a trophy. IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni and Samyak Dharewa secured second and third places, respectively. The event had a prize fund of ₹1,000,000.
