Agartala: In a tragic incident, a group of men attacked Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman at Ujan Abhoynagar in Agartala on June 19 and this act of violence resulted in Sudip incurring injuries.

Sudip happens to be the Congress candidate for the upcoming Tripura by-elections on June 23.

He has been admitted to a private hospital for treatment.

According to reports, Sudip was attacked when he was in Ujan Abhoynagar to meet a supporter as part of his campaign.

Officials informed that Sudip Roy Barman's car and Congress flags were vandalized by the suspects following the attack. The Congress party has pointed fingers toward the incumbent BJP, accusing them of orchestrating the attack.

Earlier, some unknown men attacked security personnel and the driver of Barman on May 2.

Notably, Sudip Roy Barman had deserted the BJP earlier this year and switched over to the Congress party.

He happened to be the health minister in the BJP government but was expelled from the cabinet for engaging in "anti-party activities".

He had been the MLA of the state capital from 1998 till his resignation in February this year.

Meanwhile, by-elections to the four assembly seats in Tripura will take place on June 23 and votes will be counted on June 26.
