Troops rescue 87 persons from flood in Agartala

AGARTALA: As heavy rains continued to pour at Agartala, the water level rose above danger level causing flooding and inundation all across Agartala city. On the request of the district administration of Agartala, security forces of IGAR (East) launched flood relief operations in six different parts of the city on Sunday.

On arrival at the sites the column of security forces found many houses and buildings submerged in the flood water. Representative of the district administration guided the force to the worst-affected areas of the city where a number of elderly persons, women and children were stranded. The security forces personnel carried out a swift and speedy rescue operation and evacuated 45 children, 25 women and 17 elderly men, a total of 87 persons so far.

The rescue operation is still on.

Besides, the rescue column also provided food to the local populace whose houses have been submerged in the flood water. The locals, civil administration and Chief Minister Manik Saha greatly appreciated the swift and speedy services provided by the security forces, stated a press release by Lt Col AS Walia, PRO (Defence), Tezpur.
