Agartala: Vice-chairman of Kailasahar Municipal Council, Nitish Dey submitted his resignation after the High Court of Tripura declared his membership as illegal. He won as a councillor in the municipal council election as an independent candidate but subsequently joined the BJP to become the vice-chairman.

As per the Tripura Municipal Act, an independent member can join a political party only after resigning from the post of councillor. Senior Congress leader and former PCC president Birajit Sinha filed the case claiming that Nitish Dey’s joining the BJP has violated this provision and the court accepted the argument.

Talking to reporters, Sinha expressed satisfaction over the High Court order and said work done by Nitish Dey as vice-chairman was illegal and expected that the administration will take appropriate action. Divisional committee secretary of the CPI(M) Biswarup Goswami also welcomed the High Court order.

After submitting the resignation, Nitish Dey said that he had joined BJP for the greater interest of the people of Kailasahar and during his short tenure, “the town witnessed many developments and Birajit Sinha was envious of it”.
