AGARTALA: In a tragic incident that took place in Daragabari, which falls under the jurisdiction of Amtali Police Station in Tripura's Sepahijala district, a woman was killed by her husband who later called the police to admit to his crime. The act of violence was a result of a heated family dispute which had occurred on Tuesday.
As the argument between the husband and the wife escalated, the accused, identified as Shyamal Chandra Das attacked his wife Swapna Rani Das in a fit of rage.
According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Amtali, Sankar Chandra Das, the police was informed immediately by Shyamal himself, who did not display any resistance towards his arrest.
A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team, dog squad, and specialist investigators arrived at the crime scene and recovered the body. After registering a case against the accused, the police took him into custody for further investigation.
The SDPO informed that evidence of prolonged domestic abuse was discovered just within half-an-hour of investigation. The accused admitted to his crime and the murder weapon was recovered in the presence of a gazetted officer.
Meanwhile, the family of deceased teacher Haimanti Singha Barman approached the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC), demanding a thorough investigation into her alleged murder and the immediate arrest of her husband, Mrinal Kanti Barman.
Haimanti, who succumbed to severe burn injuries in December 2024, had been allegedly set on fire by her husband with the help of his family. While one person was arrested, the prime accused remained at large. The family expressed frustration with the police's lack of action, and the case sparked public outcry, with calls for swift justice and the arrest of the remaining suspects.
