AGARTALA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's PM Surya Ghar Mufti Bijli Yojana is transforming energy generation in India, aiming to reduce electricity bills to zero by harnessing the immense potential of solar energy.
Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath emphasized the project’s revolutionary impact, describing it as a “game-changer for every household.”
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has gifted the nation an extraordinary initiative to light up every home and free families from the burden of hefty electricity bills,” said Nath during a press briefing.
He explained how the project harnesses the limitless power of the sun, going beyond faith-based practices to provide tangible benefits through solar energy.
Launched on February 13, 2024, the PM Surya Ghar Mufti Bijli Yojana aims to generate 500 gigawatts of solar power by 2030, with 200 gigawatts already achieved. The initiative focuses on rooftop solar installations, enabling families to produce their own electricity and contribute to a sustainable future. “This is where Modiji’s vision and charisma shine,” Nath remarked.
To encourage participation, the central government has allocated Rs. 75,021 crore for the scheme, spanning from 2023-24 to 2026-27. Residential households receive special subsidies: Rs. 33,000 per kilowatt for the first 2 kW of rooftop solar panels and Rs. 19,800 per kW for the next 1 kW, with a maximum subsidy of Rs. 85,800 for 3 kW installations. Additionally, housing societies and electric vehicle charging setups are eligible for subsidies of Rs. 19,800 per kW for systems up to 500 kW.
In Tripura, 10,062 solar applications have been registered on the MNRE portal, with 1,056 submissions and 48 installations completed to date. A total of 58 beneficiaries have already received subsidies, Nath disclosed.
Families can install up to 3 kW of solar panels, with surplus electricity eligible to be sold back to Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), ensuring a win-win situation. “Our officials are committed to assisting every interested household in making this project a success,” Nath assured.
The Power Minister stressed the larger objective of enhancing the share of solar energy in India’s power grid. “This project is not just about saving money; it’s about empowering citizens to contribute to a cleaner, greener future,” he stated. Urging collective action, Nath concluded, “Let’s all do Surya Vandana together and embrace the power of the sun."
With its ambitious goals and evident benefits, the PM Surya Ghar Mufti Bijli Yojana is set to become a cornerstone of India’s renewable energy future, driving sustainable development while delivering economic savings to millions of households.
