
AGARTALA: The 16th Finance Commission, led by Arvind Panagariya, discussed Tripura’s financial plans for the next five years, starting from the 2026-27 fiscal year. The meeting took place on Thursday and was attended by Chief Minister Manik Saha, Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, and Chief Secretary JK Sinha.
During the discussion, Panagariya highlighted that the Tripura government had presented a detailed plan of its expenditure and planning for the next five years. He also stated that the state's financial situation appears to be in stable condition. He also stated that Tripura has asked for a higher share of taxes, hoping to increase it from 41% to 50%.
Regarding the pay structure for state government employees, Panagariya said that Tripura had submitted its financial projections for the next five years. He added that the state's memo included a short summary of these projections, but the Finance Commission has not yet made a final decision.
Meanwhile, a 12-member team from the 16th Finance Commission, led by Chairman Dr. Arvind Panagariya, arrived in Tripura on Wednesday to assess the state’s finances and development plans. They were welcomed at Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala and then traveled to Paschim Majlishpur Gram Panchayat in the Jirania block of West Tripura district.
The delegation was joined by Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar, the Director of the Panchayat and Land Revenue Department, and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Jirania.
