AGARTALA: An ambitious goal has been set by the government-led Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) to build solar-powered community-based purifying water plants in 50 of the state's most isolated tribal villages.

This project aims to tackle water supply challenges in remote areas with difficult terrain and sparse populations, where conventional electricity is not a viable option.

Following the successful completion of the project's first phase, which involved installing solar-powered purified water facilities in 14 tribal villages at a cost of Rs 2.24 crore, this initiative was taken.

Due to the high operating expenses of conventional power sources, these localities had trouble sustaining a consistent water supply before, but the sustainable option has helped them.

In an interview with the media, Debabratra Sulkadas, Joint Director of TREDA, revealed that the inability of the villagers to pay high electricity bills caused many rural water delivery systems in tribal areas to become non-functional.

The organisation responded by identifying 14 such villages where solar energy has been utilised to power systems that provide dependable and affordable drinking water.

Earlier this month, Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath highlighted the PM Surya Ghar Mufti Bijli Yojana scheme's transformative impact, calling it a “game-changer for every household.” He praised the initiative as a significant step towards providing sustainable energy and financial relief to families, describing it as a remarkable gift to the nation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's PM Surya Ghar Mufti Bijli Yojana is revolutionizing energy generation in India by leveraging solar power to eliminate electricity bills.
