Agartala: Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced in the state assembly on Friday that the shortage of college teachers in Tripura is being addressed through standard procedures, with recruitment for 401 posts to commence in phases.

He stated that the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) has been requested to conduct exams for 201 Assistant Professor posts. Additionally, cabinet approval has been granted for 200 more posts, and financial concurrence has been received to initiate the recruitment process soon.

Dr. Saha highlighted that the state’s 31 general degree colleges have 72,009 students but only 787 faculty members, including PGTs, Associate Professors, and Assistant Professors.

As per UGC guidelines, one professor is required for every 60 students, necessitating 1,230 professors. To address the gap, 710 guest faculty members are currently providing services.

Responding to the discussion, MLA Ashoke Chandra Mitra emphasized that the teacher shortage is affecting students’ education and urged the Higher Education Department to expedite recruitment, noting the availability of qualified NET, SLET, and Ph.D. candidates in the state. Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy also cited the revised teacher-student ratio under the New Education Policy.

Additionally, MLAs Paul Dhangshu and Pathan Lal Jamatia proposed renaming the general degree colleges in Longtharai Valley and Kanchanpur after late leaders Shyamacharan Tripura and Drau Kumar Reang, respectively, recognizing their contributions to the state and their communities.
