2nd North East Olympic Games: Manipur jump to top spot in medal tally

GUWAHATI: Manipur jumped on the top of the medals tally on the penultimate day of the 2nd North East Olympic Games in Shillong today. Manipur finished the day VI with 221 medals that included 78 gold, 71 silver and 72 bronze. Assam increased their tally to 183 medals and among those 75 are gold, 55 silver and remaining 53 are bronze. Arunachal Pradesh (108) and Meghalaya (142) are at third and fourth spot respectively.

Assam today collected medals in athletics, weightlifting, karate, judo, wrestling and boxing events.

Shooting: Assam won two gold medals in this event today. Shreyashi Majumdar and Sidhanta Chatterjee bagged gold medal in mixed team category. Bishoy Singh and Y Gautam also bagged gold medal in the mixed event of air pistol.

Athletics: Assam ended the competition with 22 (12-7-3) medals and the performance also helped the team to bag the second best team award in the meet.

Weightlifting: Assam won five medals on Tuesday and three of them are gold. Kapil Sonowal collected gold medals in 96 kg. The other two gold medals were won by Sangita Sadhnid (71 kg) and Palki Pradip Kashyap (76kg).

Boxing: Assam altogether bagged eight medals in this event. Among the eight medals one is gold, one is silver and has six bronze medals. The lone gold medal was won by Imdan Hussain.

The 7-day competition will conclude on Wednesday. Around 3000 players from various parts of the region participated in the Games in 18 events. Assam took part in 17 events.
