36th ‘Abhiruchi Sports Day’ observed across Assam

Guwahati: The 36th Abhiruchi Sports Day is being observed across Assam on Tuesday.

Arjun awardee from Assam Bhogeswar Baruah's birthday is celebrated on 3 September every year in Assam as "Abhiruchi Sports Day" as a mark of tribute to the sportsman.

Baruah was the first athlete from Assam who won gold in an 800-metre running event of 1966 Asian Games.

This year’s Abhiruchi Sports Day was organized centrally in Guwahati with a mass rally event starting from Chandmari flyover to Nehru Stadium in the morning.

Several school students across the Guwahati city participated in the event today morning.

Arjun awardee Bhogeswar Baruah was also present at the event at Nehru Stadium today, an autobiography ‘Suwarani Dour’ of Bhogeswar Baruah was released in the event by Assam Chief Minister Press Advisor Hrishikesh Goswami.

The chairman of the organizing committee Balendra Mohan Chakraborty addressing a media gathering here on Monday said that the day’s programme will kick off with the mass jogging from Chandmari. It would be followed by the cultural programme of different schools.

He also announced the name of 62 players whom would be felicitated by the Abhiruchi Sports Group. The felicitation function, however, would be held later.

Meanwhile, Swimming coach Babul Gurung will receive this year Chidananda Das Best Coach award. On the other hand tennis player Antariksh Tamuly will be awarded the Gopal Barua most promising player award. Abhiruchi will also felicitated six former players and sports organizers on this occasions and they are: Paban Gogoi (Nazira), Khargeswar Dutta (Nirza), Gaffar Ud Zaman (Nalbari), Kamakhya Das (Guwahati), Lakheswar Kataki (Guwahati) and Sarat Chandra Kalita (Guwahati).’

Similarly, in Sivasagar’s Demow the 36th Abhiruchi Sports Day was observed today. Under the aegis of Demow Handball Club, a mass race was organized at Demow sports ground in the morning hours today.

It may also be mentioned that Arjun Awardee Bhogeswar Baruah was born in Sivasagar District in the year 1940.
