GUWAHATI: As the 2026 Commonwealth Games and the 2026 Asian Games approach, India’s ace sprinter Amlan Borgohain is focused on stepping up his preparations. With an eye on podium finishes, Amlan is keen to make the most of the time available and has expressed plans to seek advanced training abroad.

Currently honing his skills at the Reliance Foundation in Mumbai, Amlan shared his future training goals with the media during a press conference in Guwahati on Monday. The sprinter, who has made a name for himself in the national athletics scene, emphasized the importance of exposure to global standards to improve his performance further.

“I feel the need for a competitive edge to reach the podium at both the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games,” Amlan said.

He also added: “Training with top international sprinters will help me refine my skills and provide the boost I need to perform at the highest level.”

Amlan’s aspirations extend to competing in multiple events, including the 100m, 200m, and relays. He expressed confidence that additional overseas training would make a significant difference in his performance.

The upcoming Commonwealth Games, scheduled to be held in Glasgow in July, 2026, followed by the Asian Games in Japan later that same year.

Amlan’s ambitions have garnered strong support from Assam’s Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma. Amlan, on Sunday, met with the Chief Minister, who offered valuable encouragement and advice. Sarma advised Amlan to focus exclusively on his training and assured him that the state government would provide all the necessary support for his success.

Amlan’s plans also align with the ongoing developments within the state’s athletic infrastructure. The Assam Athletic Association is set to launch a new residential athletics academy in Nalbari. The academy will house 20 male and 20 female athletes, with all expenses covered by the association. Coaches from outside the state will also be brought in to provide high-quality guidance.

Gitartha Goswami, the Secretary of the Assam Athletic Association, was also present at the media briefing. On the proposed academy, Goswami said, “The new academy will help nurture young talent, and we will ensure they receive world-class training. Additionally, we are planning to set up another academy focusing on athletes from rural areas, providing them with the opportunity to train and develop their skills.”

Goswami also extended all possible support to Amlan for his preparations for the forthcoming major international events. “We are always behind him, and whatever help he needs, we will try to provide it,” said Goswami.
