Assam Sign Off With 10 Medals At Senior National Aquatic C'ship, Shivangi Creates Meet Record, Astha Wins Gold

GUWAHATI: It's happy ending for Assam in the 75th Senior National Aquatic Championship which was concluded at the Zakir Hussain Aquatic Complex here today. The host picked up three more medals on the last day and the crowd also witnessed a new meet record in the competition from promising star Shivangi Sarma.

It was the second meet record created by a State swimmer in this competition. Earlier yesterday another promising swimmer Astha Choudhury bagged gold with a new meet record in the women 100m butterfly.

Both Shivangi and Astha today picked up one gold medal each and Bikram Changmai was the other swimmer who bagged a bronze on the concluding day.

Astha gave the first medal of the day to Assam in women 200m butterfly when she won the competition clocking 2:22.59. It was followed by Bikram Chanmai's (2:05.24) bronze medal performance in the men's 200m butterfly.

Then came the stunning performance of Shivangi in 100m freestyle where she clocked 57.73 to win gold with a new meet record. The previous record in this category was 59.26 which was in the name of Kenisha Gupta of Mumbai.

Another meet record was created today in the pool and it was Chahat Arora of Punjab who bettered her own record (1:14.38) in women's 100m Breaststroke with timing of 1:13.61.

With these three medals Assam altogether collected 10 medals (3-4-3) from the competition and finished at the sixth place in the medal tally. Karnataka bagged the best team award in the meet with 29 (14-4-11) medals. SSCB (12) and Delhi (6) took second and third spot respectively.

In the Diving, Services and Railways bagged best men and women team award. In Water Polo, Railways took the best team title in the men's section and the Police team collected the best team award in the women's category
