GUWAHATI: The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has officially lifted the suspension on its Secretary General, Hemanta Kalita, as well as the Nagaland Boxing Association. The announcement was made by former BFI President and head of the federation’s interim committee, Ajay Singh, during a press briefing held in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Singh clarified that the suspension of Kalita was the result of a “misunderstanding,” and confirmed that the issue had now been fully resolved.

“Hemanta Kalita has been a valuable part of the boxing fraternity and has worked closely with me for the past eight years,” Singh said.

He added: “In recent months, certain issues arose due to misunderstandings, which led to a investigation. Although he was initially unable to participate in the inquiry, he is now fully cooperating. With that, the interim committee has decided to revoke the suspension.”

Reacting to the decision, Hemanta Kalita expressed his gratitude and reaffirmed his dedication to the sport. “I thank the interim committee and Ajay Singh for reinstating me. This allows me to continue contributing to the development of boxing and supporting our athletes,” Kalita said.

Although the suspension has been lifted, Kalita will not be able to contest the upcoming BFI elections, scheduled for August 21, due to a mandatory cooling-off period after serving two consecutive four-year terms in office. However, Singh confirmed that Kalita will continue to play an important role in the federation’s operations even though he will not hold any post this time.

During his visit to Guwahati, Ajay Singh also held meetings with officials of various state boxing associations. He confirmed his candidature for the BFI President’s post in the upcoming elections.

Singh took the opportunity to commend the Assam Amateur Boxing Association for its pivotal role in promoting the sport. Highlighting Assam's successful hosting of the World Youth Boxing Championship, he noted that the event helped nurture five Indian boxers who went on to shine at the international level.

“I have no hesitation in saying that Assam hosted the event beautifully,” Singh said. “We are already planning to bring another world-class competition to the state very soon.”

He also praised Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain for her initiative in launching a boxing academy for young talents. “It’s a commendable effort. We’re exploring ways to support her with high-quality training and international exposure to boost her chances at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics,” Singh added.

Furthermore, Singh hailed rising star Ankushita Boro as a promising Olympic prospect, and acknowledged the transformative impact of Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s sports policy, which he said has significantly benefitted boxing and other disciplines across the state.

Singh also extended his appreciation to Union Cabinet Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for initiating several key sports programs during his tenure as Union Sports Minister.
