GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today appealed everybody to pray for ace boxer Lovlina Borgohain who will take on Turkey's boxer B Surmeneli in a semi final bout in Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 AM.

It will be the first occasion when a boxer from Assam will fight to book a berth in the final of an Olympic. Lovlina also gets a chance to become the best performer boxer from India in Olympics. Earlier, two Indian boxers-Vijender Singh and Mary Kom-entered into the semi final in Olympics and had to satisfy with bronze medal. A win in tomorrow's bout means the State boxer will return at least with silver medal.

Sports and Youth Welfare Department and Assam Olympic Association today organized the special programme this evening at the RG Baruah Sports Complex to pray for Lovlina by lighting earthen lamp. Chief Minister Sarma along with his several cabinet colleagues, the officials of the Assam Olympic Association and Assam Amateur Boxing Association attended the function.

Lighting the lamp Sarma today appealed to everybody to pray for Lovlina and lit a lamp in the morning.

Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Bimal Borah, Information and Public Relations Minister Pijush Hazarika, Urban Development Minister Ashok Singhal, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan and sports enthusiasts were present on the occasion. Several top boxers of the state also prayed for Lovlina in the same function.

Later Assam Olympic Association handed over a cheque of Rs 2,16,000 to Chief Minister towards Chief Miniester's Relief Fund.

Earlier in the morning, a car rally was organized in the city to support and generate best wishes for Assam's pugilist. Attending the function, organized by Byatikram group, Regional Director of India tourism North East, Sankha Subhra Devbarman said, "Lovlina not only made the state proud but also the whole nation by qualifying for the Olympic medals and this itself is a moment to cherish". MLA and Former President of Axam Xahitya Xabha Paramananda Rajbongshi also attended the function.
