Quito: Argentina started its 2025 Copa América Femenina on a positive note, beating an outnumbered Uruguay 1-0 at the Ciudad Deportiva Independiente del Valle in Quito, Ecuador, on Tuesday.
The first half could barely separate the two sides, with the Albiceleste having a slight edge.
Florencia Bonsegundo had the best chance of the half when she caught the opposition goalkeeper out of position and she headed the ball on target, which was cleared off the line by Angela Gomez.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 75th minute, when Bonsegundo lobbed the ball off an assist from Agostina Holzheier, who had come off the bench 10 minutes earlier.
Uruguay’s night went from bad to worse when Wendy Carballo was sent off, 10 minutes from time. In the next round, Argentina will play Chile, while Uruguay will look for a turnaround against Peru.
Both matches will be played on Friday.
Later, Ecuador secured its first win in the Copa América Femenina by defeating Peru 3-1 at the Ciudad Deportiva Independiente del Valle.
Though Peru started the match aggressively, it was the hosts who struck first against the run of play. Nayely Bolanos combined with Emily Arias, with the latter finding the net off a low shot, her second strike of the tournament.
Bolanos doubled the lead, converting from the spot, after Danna Pesántez was fouled in the box.
Peru tried to come back into the game after the break: Karen Flores hit the post in the 52nd minute, and Raquel Bilcape had two shots inside the box just after the hour mark. But none could actually rattle the net.
Bilcape finally got her name on the scoresheet when she steered a low cross from Canales on the right side into the bottom corner of Andrea Morán’s goal.
But Ligia Moreira’s strike in stoppage time put the competition to bed with a 3-1 victory for the hosts.
With four points in two matches, Ecuador now leads Group A and will rest over the weekend before facing Chile next Monday, July 21. Peru, on the other hand, will face Uruguay on Friday (July 18) as both sides look for their first win in the tournament. Agencies
