KOKRAJHAR: The 30th Assam Inter District Masters Athletic Championship got underway from today at Kokrajhar SAI Stadium. The mega athletic event will be continuing till December 30 next. Around 1200 players from 32 districts of Assam are taking part in the events- race, shot put throw, discuss throw, javelin throw, marathon race and jumping.
The president of the Organizing Committee and MLA Lawrence Islary gave the welcome address while Minister UG Brahma attended the opening ceremony as the chief guest.
In his inaugural speech, Minister UG Brahma said, the Masters Athletic meet was a sporting event for the players of age between 35 to 90 years which is not an easy task. He said, many old players and winners in different events in the national and international events had been in Kokrajhar to participate the athletic events which is a matter of courage. He also said, around 1200 players from 32 districts of Assam were taking part in the event signifies the sporting legacy of the State.
Brahma said, Kokrajhar was one of the hotspots of sports especially in football but it lacks infrastructures. He said, after hosting the Durand Cup at Kokrajhar SAI, Kokrajhar could draw the attention of the All India Football Federation and other sporting associations. He also said Kokrajhar SAI got new infrastructure boost after hosting of Durand Cup. He also said the health issue was the common problem of all and thus taking interest in the sports is utmost important in everybody’s life.
The opening ceremony was also addressed by the working president of the Assam Master’s Athletic Association (AMAA) Maguram Balary and attended by the Ex president of Assam Football Association Hemendra Nath Brahma, Deputy Secretary of Sports, BTC Rijendra Brahma, vice president of Assam Olympic Association Kabiranjan Brahma, chairperson of Kokrajhar Municipal Board Pratibha Brahma and others.
Earlier, the flags off the Assam Masters Athletic Association and Organizing Committee were hoisted by the vice president Maguram Balary and MLA Lawrence Islary respectively. The oath taking of participants was done by Sudhir Ranjan Narzary while oath on behalf of judges and referees was done by Niraj Daimary.
