GUWAHATI: The Assam Athletics Association (AAA) felicitated Mehdi Hasan for his medal winning performance at the Asian U20 Athletics Championship held in Yecheon, South Korea recently. The athlete won a bronze medal in the championship participating in the Men’s 1500 meters event.

Hasan, who hails from North Athiabari near Barpeta Road, was felicitated by Nandita Gorlosa, Minister of Sports and Youth Welfare, in a function held at a city hotel. The event was also attended by Gitartha Goswami, Member Secretary, State Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare; Hemanta Kalita, secretary general, Boxing Federation of India; Lakhya Konwar and Ashok Bharali, president and general Secretary of AAA; Pradeep Timung, Director, Sports and Youth Welfare and Abul Kalam Azad, father of Mehdi. Speaking at the event, Mehdi said, “I want to thank Assam Athletics Association for the recognition and felicitation bestowed upon me today. At the same time I want to thank all my coaches for their constant support and guidance towards enhancing my performance.”

Mehdi, now training under Anupama Srivastava at Bhopal, started his career at the Sarusajai Sports complex under Nipon Das and Nabajit Malakar. Later he shifted to Kolkata. However due to a series of injuries once he was considering quitting the game but later the athlete decided to continue because of constant support from coaches and family members.
