Our Sport Reporter

GUWAHATI: The preparation of state teams for forthcoming Khelo India Games are now in full swing. In a brief interaction with the Sentinel the former national player S Dhanajit Singh, who is monitoring the training of Kabaddi team, highlighted the ongoing preparation of his sides. Here is the excerpts

The Sentinel(TS): Tell us about the preparation of state team for Khelo India.

Dhanajit Singh (DS): It’s going on right track. We have good team in the U-17 girl’s category and they can upset many big teams in the coming competition.

(TS): There is allegation that teams are not getting proper facilities for training.

It’s not fully true. Players accommodate at the hotels this time which is a very big thing for them. We don’t have too much complain on the food also. But yes we have not get the opportunity to practice in a full size court till now. The renovation work of Tarun Ram Phukan is on final stage and hope next couple of day’s we will be able to shift our practice there.

(TS): What is the future of Kabaddi in Assam?

(DS): Look I am associated with kabaddi in Assam for a long period. I belong to Manipur but after joining Railway I have shifted to Guwahati and also represented Assam in the National championship. Honestly speaking the standard of the game is much better than our times. Recently our U-17 girl’s team entered into the pre quarter final in national championship. We have really a few good players, particularly in the girl’s category, who are capable to represent India in the coming days.

(TS): What the players of Assam now need most?

(DS): I feel they need a few academies across the state. If you go Punjab and Haryana you will see academies in every parts of the state and it is the reason that they are dominating in national level. Now we have many quality players in this game and if they get proper facilities I am very optimistic the scenario will change very soon in the state.

(TS): What can we expect from Assam Kabaddi team in coming Khelo India?

(DS): Look we are gradually improving in the national circuit. Earlier I have told that we have good players in the junior girl’s category and definitively we will try our best to make a podium finish.
