Sources said the 14th Bodoland Indigenous Games would be held at Medaghat field in Baksa district with three days programme on March 7, 8 and 9 in association with the Bodoland Indigenous Games Association (BIGA) central and Baksa district committee respectively. BIGA general secretary Guno Shankar Wary said the BIGA which had been working to preserve, to protect and to promote all Bodo indigenous games will organize competitions of at least 10 traditional sports while other events would be demonstrated for preservation. He said the Bodos had over 50 identified traditional sports which are heading for extinction. He also said the BIGA focused the protection and preservation of all traditional sports and realignment of its importance in the society which has deep connection with culture and history of the Bodos. He also said the government of BTR had been giving due importance to the necessity of preservation of indigenous sports and extended support to the BIGA.
It may be mentioned that the BIGA formally came into being in 2007 at the behest of late Chanakya Brahma who was mastermind of formation of association for indigestion sports. He led indigenous game players to China for three times, and demonstrated Bodo traditional Khomlainai which got applause from various quarters due to its unique style and art. Brahma died on October 31 in China in the year 2012 while he was about to return to India after participating in the World Martial Arts Championship held at Zengzou city in China due to a heart attack. He demonstrated the Bodo Khomlainai for the 3rd time in China. He carried out his research work on Bodo Indigenous games for over twenty years before the formation of BIGA.
In respect of late Chanakya Brahma's selfless initiative and contributions for the preservation and promotion of traditional games, the CEM of BTC Pramod Boro recently announced that the government of BTR will start award in the name of late Chanakya Brahma for achievers in Indigenous Games from next years besides taking initiative to provide scholarship to players of indigenous games.
