GUWAHATI: Congratulations started to pour in soon after Assam's boxer Lovlina Borgohain bagged a bronze medal for India on Wednesday at the Tokyo Olympics.

Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi in a statement said, "Congratulations to Lovlina Borgohain. You have made the state and the country proud by dint of your grit and determination. You shall be a source of inspiration for the young generation by becoming the first in Assam to have won the Olympic medal. May the Almighty bestow on you more strength and power to bring more laurels to the nation."

A wave of excitement has gripped Assam in the past few days and it continued this morning also. People of all ages in cities and villages witnessed her semifinal match, including Guwahati and the boxer's village at Baromukhiya. Assam Assembly, led by Speaker Biswajit Daimary, adjourned Wednesday's session for 30 minutes to allow the ministers, MLA's and officials to watch Lovlina's match with great enthusiasm.

Big screen was also installed at the RG Baruah Sports complex where good numbers of sports lovers today witnessed the match live. Although Lovlina lost her semi final bout but the people immediately started to celebrate her bronze winning moment. At Baromukhiya people danced on the streets and the sound of drumbeats and firecrackers reverberated in the village.

Among other joined to congratulate Lovlina were former Chif Minister of Assam and Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary and Agriculture and Veterinary Minister Atul Bora.

Sonowal took his twitter to congratulate the boxer. "Congratulations to Lovlina Borgohain for power her way to win the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020. You have made immensely proud and have emerged as an icon for our youth. I wish that you achieve much more.," said Sonowal.

Patowary in a statement said, "Lovlina Borgohain has scripted history by being the first Assamese to win an Olympic medal. She is the source of inspiration for the young generation and may she scale new heights of success in future.'

Bora told, "Lovlina you have made Assam and the whole of India proud by winning bronze medal in the women boxing in welterweight category."

Several former sportspersons also congratulates Lovlina for her medal winning performance in Tokyo. Little Master Sachin Tendulkar in his twitter handle wrote, "Congratulations on winning a bronze Lovlina. Terrifice achievement to win a medal in your first ever Olympics. With your commitment and hard work I am sure things will only get better from here. The entire nation is very proud of you.

Vijender Singh, the first Indian boxer to win a bronze from Olympics, too congratulate Assam's boxer. "And it's bronze in boxing. Proud of you Lovlina." wrote Vijender.
