GUWAHATI: Haryana’s men’s team and Tamil Nadu’s women’s team claimed the inaugural U-23 National Basketball Championship titles at the Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium here on Monday.
In the men’s final, Haryana registered 94-73 victory over Punjab. Captain B. Sahil led the charge, scoring 29 points, supported by Rajan, who added 25 points. Haryana was in control throughout the match, leading 47-28 at halftime.
In the women’s final, Tamil Nadu beat Karnataka 76-58. Trailing by one point at halftime (29-28), Tamil Nadu surged ahead in the third quarter, thanks to Harima Sundari, who recorded 22 points and 16 rebounds. Nitika was the top scorer for Tamil Nadu with 27 points.
The bronze medals were awarded to Karnataka in the men’s category and Delhi in the women’s section.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma attended the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest and also presented the prizes. Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Nandita Gorlosa, Basketball Federation of India Secretary General Kulvinder Singh, and Treasurer Chngala Naidu also attended the event.
The winners took home a prize of Rs 3 lakh, while the runners-up received Rs 2 lakh. The third-place finishers earned Rs 1 lakh.
