GUWAHATI: The Jaidip Mukerjea Tennis Academy, in collaboration with the Department of Sports and Youth Welfare, is set to host a Junior Elite Tennis Camp at the Rudra Singh Sports Complex in Guwahati. The 7-day camp, part of the ‘Revival of Indian Tennis’ initiative, will commence on Monday.
The camp aims to provide high-performance training to 22 promising players aged between U-13 and U-16 from across the country. 8 players from Assam will be the part of this camp. Emphasis will be placed on modern techniques and professional training methods.
Tennis legend Jaidip Mukerjea, along with Arjuna and Padma Shri awardee Somdev Devvarman and former India No. 1 Prajnesh Gunneswaran, will lead the coaching and mentoring sessions.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday evening, Mukerjea said, “The players attending the camp will undergo a week-long intensive training program. The North East has immense talent, and this kind of initiative can really help young players to realize their potential.”
Also present at the briefing were Somdev Devvarman and Indrani Laskar, Additional Secretary of the Sports and Youth Welfare Department.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Somdev, who was born in Guwahati, said, “It feels great to be back in my birthplace and work with the local talent. The initiative by the Jaidip Mukerjea Tennis Academy is truly commendable, and it promises great benefits for the region’s young players. With some of the top names in Indian tennis involved, this camp will be an invaluable experience for them.”
Outlining the daily schedule, Somdev added, “We’ll focus equally on fitness and on-court training. Each day, players will spend around 90 minutes on fitness and close to three and a half hours on court. We hope to make a real impact.”
When asked whether the region could produce another player of his caliber within the next five years, Somdev responded, “Five years may be a bit short, but if we build the right tennis ecosystem here, I believe we can develop not just one but several international-level players in the next decade.”
