GUWAHATI: The Secretary General of the Boxing Federation of India Hemanta Kalita lauded India's performance in the Asian Boxing Championship which concluded in Dubai yesterday. Indian boxers made scintillating performance in the meet and collected record 15 medals which included 2 gold, 5 silver and 8 bronze.

Two Assam boxers-Shiva Thapa and Lovlina Borgohain- who were the part of the team- also bagged one medal each. Shiva collected a silver while Lovlina had to satisfy with a bronze medal.

Talking to The Sentinel Kalita today said, "Yes, our boxers displayed terrific performance in the meet. We have collected 15 medals which is a new record. However I should admit that we were expecting more gold this time."

Commenting on Shiva and Lovlina's performance in the Championship Kalita said, "Both Shiva and Lovlina fought very well in the meet although both of them had to suffer defeat by very narrow margin. Same incidents occurred to some of our other boxers also. Due to COVID-19 pandemic Indian boxers didn't get opportunity to train properly this time. Perhaps it was the reason that several of our boxers lost narrowly in Dubai otherwise I belief, we would win more gold this time."

Kalita is optimistic that the performance in the Asian Boxing championship would help the Indian boxers to boost their confidence level ahead of Olympics.

"It was the last competition for our boxers before the Olympics. So Tokyo bound boxers, who won medal in Dubai, will now definitely appear in the Olympics with high in confidence," said the Secretary General.

Kalita also informed that Olympic bound Indian boxers will be sent aboard for special training before the Mega event. The training venue would be finalized shortly.
