GUWAHATI: North East Frontier Railway Sports Association (NFRSA) came from behind to defeat Global FC 3-1 in the first semi-final of the 70th Bordoloi Trophy Football Championship at Judges Field today. The win helped them to book their place in the final.
Global FC, the underdogs in the competition, had already made an impression by defeating the defending champions OILFC in the pre-quarterfinals and looked strong in the first half of today’s match. They managed to take the lead, but NFRSA turned the game thereafter scoring three goals to seal their victory.
Both teams started cautiously, with each side attempting to apply pressure through counter-attacks. However, both goalkeepers remained vigilant, preventing any early goals. In the 36th minute, Global FC took the lead when Nicodim Narzary, in fine form during the competition, expertly converted a pass from a teammate to put his side ahead.
Just before halftime, NFRSA equalized. Following a corner, Akash Dutta found himself unmarked inside the box, controlled the ball, and calmly slotted it into the net to level the score at 1-1.
The second half saw NFRSA ramp up the pressure, and they scored two more goals. Sudhir Laltomjam was the hero, scoring both. In the 74th minute, Laltomjam’s header gave NFRSA the lead. The Global FC goalkeeper was caught off-guard, and the ball went in without any chance for him to stop it.
In the dying moments of the game, during added time, NFRSA sealed their win through Laltomjam. The ball grazed a Global FC defender’s head before finding the back of the net, making the score 3-1.
NFRSA will now await the winner of the second semifinal between Shillong Lajong FC and NEUFC, which will take place on Tuesday at 4:30 PM at the same venue. The date of the final is March 13.
