Traditional sports is pride of nation: Deepak Mehra

Kokrajgar: The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Red Horns Division of the army Deepak Mehra on Monday said the traditional sports played by indigenous communities were the pride of the nation.

Mehra while attending the prize distribution ceremony of Indigenous Bodo Games,2020 and open Khomlainai Championship organized by 3rd Sikh Regiment of the army in association with Sonitpur district Bodo Indigenous Games Association at Dhekiajuli Sports Association field said that he was happy to see various traditional sports played by indigenous tribal people in the region. He said that the Bodo tribe has lots of traditional sports and the Bodot Khomlainai becomes a very popular game not only in Assam but in different parts of the country as well. He also hoped the Khomlainai will reach the world arena very soon and would be recognized for the Olympic Games in the future.

Mehra said there were lots of sports talents in Assam and Bodo tribe has many national and international players in various games. The youths of the region should come forward in the sporting arena for the strong physique as well as for state and nation-building, he said adding that the army unit will continue to sponsor the indigenous game events every year with a view for preservation and promotion of traditional sports.

The prize distribution ceremony was also attended by ex-MLA Rakeswar Brahma, Additional DC of Sonitpur Parag Kakoti, ABSU advisor Khungkra Sargiary, secretary of DSA Apurba Bhattacharjya and leaders of the central committee, Bodoland Indigenous Games Association (BIGA).

Udalguri district got the best team trophy for winning the highest number of medals while Chirang district received 2nd best trophy. In the indigenous games event, a competition of Khomlainai, Daria Pantha, Dongfang Bukunai, Dahal Thungri Sibnai, and Mwkhra traditional games were held
