Guwahati: A proud moment for Northeast India, as two of its players, are selected to participate in the upcoming Asian Beach Games. Mathew John Marak from Assam and Maibam Chinkheinganba from Manipur, have been selected in the men's national team for Asian Beach Games, which is to be held at Sanya city, China.

Both Marak and Maibam are members of Assam Sport Climbing Association (ASCA). The sixth Asian Beach Games will be held from April 2 to April 10, 2021.

Based on their performances, the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) selected Marak and Maibam.

The general secretary of the Assam Sport Climbing Association, Mayur Mahanta, said in a statement that Marak and Maibam have achieved top ranks in the Asian Youth Climbing Championship, which was held in Bengaluru last year.

A new sport for the state, sports climbing is similar to rock climbing, which involves the placement of permanent anchors and a rope attached to the climber's body to prevent from falling. A series of bolts are placed along the climbing route, which helps the climber to climb up.

The Assam Sport Climbing Association is affiliated to IMF. It was established in the year 2015.

Sport climbing will also be seen in the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo.
