NEW DELHI: As many as over 1.17 lakh people have been declared foreigners in Assam by Foreigner Tribunals (FTs) in the past 33 years.

Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy recently told the Parliament that the number of cases disposed of by Foreigner Tribunals each month varies from month to month and Tribunal to Tribunal.

“Foreigners Tribunals function as per the procedure laid down in Foreigners Tribunals (Order) 1964. As per the order dated 17.12.2014 of Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in WP(C) No.562/2012, a Special Bench of Hon’ble Gauhati High Court is regularly monitoring the functioning of the Foreigners Tribunals,” said Reddy.

A person not satisfied with opinion of an FT is entitled to approach higher courts. Adjudication of citizenship is a legal process and every person is given full opportunity to prove his/her claim of citizenship, he said.
