GUWAHATI: AXX (Axam Xahitya Xabha) president Paramananda Rajbongshi is not ready to budge even an inch when it comes to the compromise of any sort on the use of mother tongues. Renewing AXX’s stand on mother tongues, he has set languages in order of priority – mother tongue as the first language, the State language as the second, Hindi as the third and English as the fourth.
A nationwide debate has been underway since Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s tweet ‘India is a country of different languages and every language has its own importance but it is very important to have a language which should become the identity of India in the world. If one language can unite the country today, it is the widely-spoken Hindi language’. The Union Home Minister also tweeted ‘Today, on the occasion of Hindi Day, I appeal to all the citizens of the country that we should increase the use of our mother tongue and also use the Hindi language as one language to realize the dreams of Bapu and iron man Sardar Patel…’
When The Sentinel asked him for comments on this vexed issue, the AXX president said, “No one can thrust a language upon us in place of our mother tongue. The AXX isn’t going to accept any such policy that’s out to kill mother tongues. Indian States have been created based mostly on languages. Any effort to impose a language on the States will lead to conflict.”
Making the stand of the AXX on the issue clear, Rajbongshi said, “Our stand is straight. The mother tongue always comes first, followed by the State language, Hindi and English. We’ll fight tooth and nail any attempt to bring Hindi or English as number one or two in the order of priority.”
Rajbongshi further said, “We’ve already submitted our language policy to the government. Our policy makes every job seeker to qualify the test of his/her mother tongue. However, the State government hasn’t implemented the policy as yet.”
