Former Director General of Police Khagen Sarma Passes Away

GUWAHATI: Former Director General of Police Khagen Sarma breathed his last at a private hospital in the city at 7.15 pm on Friday. He was battling cancer. He leaves behind his wife Bandanaa Sarma and son Trinayan Sarma.

Khagen Sarma, who belongs to the 1982 IPS batch, took charge of the DGP on January 17, 2014 and retired from the same post on November 30, 2015. Known for tough stand against militancy Khagen Sarma was credited with bringing ULFA, NDFB (P), as well as NDFB (Ranjan Daimary faction) to the peace talks table during his tenure.

It may be mentioned that during Sharma’s turn as the ADGP (SB), on 24 January, 2012, at least 668 militants belonging to nine militant outfits of the State laid down their arms before the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in Guwahati.

Sarma saw the rise and fall of militancy in the State. In fact, he can be credited for bringing about the downfall of several militant groups and bringing many others to the negotiating table.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal deeply condoled the death of Khagen Sarma. The Assam Secretariat Service Association expressed its condolence.
