GUWAHATI: State Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary has claimed that no other governments in the State and at the Centre laid as much importance on the Assam Accord as the present governments at Dispur and New Delhi do.

Addressing a press conference at Janata Bhawan here on Saturday, Patowary said, “Under the present State and the Central governments, the NRC (National Register of Citizens) has been updated following an order from the Supreme Court of India, and a high-level committee has been formed for providing Constitutional safeguards to the Assamese. As and when the high-level committee on Clause 6 of the Assam Accord submits its report, it will be tabled in the Parliament. Apart from these two, the Government is now laying stress on the implementation of Clause 7 of the Assam Accord. The implementation of this Clause will ensure all-round economic development of the State.”

Dwelling on investments in the State, Patowary said, “Advantage Assam held on February 3 and 4, 2018 scripted a record of highest investments among the Indian states through the signing of 207 MoUs (Memorandum of Understandings), involving around Rs 79,000 crore. In post-Advantage Assam investment amounting to Rs 53,464.19 crore, including Rs 42,782.28 crore in the Oil and Petroleum sector, were received. Apart from this, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs offered subsidies of Rs 4,600 crore for 15 years to the BCPL, Rs 3,500 crore to the ONGCL for oil exploration and Rs 200 crore to NRL, also for oil exploration.”

Investment received in post-Advantage Assam in other departments, according to the Minister, is Rs 3166.25 crore. The total investment in the State in post-Advantage Assam is Rs 64930.44 crore, he added.

Patowary further stated that work for the development of the airports in the State, including the new terminal at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LFBI) Airport, are underway. He claimed that while the work of the Rupsi Airport is nearing completion, land acquisition for the airport in Jorhat is going on. Works for the Silchar Greenfield Airport are also underway, he said, adding that tenders have been invited for six overseas flights from Guwahati.

On the current agitation against the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act), the Minister said that it has affected around 22 lakh unemployed in the State, besides making prospective domestic and foreign investors jittery over investing in the State. “The Congress and the Left have no right to hinder development in Assam,” he added.
