War Cry Against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) Reaches Crescendo

GUWAHATI: The chants are thundering and unifying. They ring out right from the corridors of power (Janata Bhawan) in Dispur to the remotest part of Assam. ‘Ranahunkar’ or war cry against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) has created a heat wave in the air and atmosphere across the State despite the wintry chill. Students to elderly persons have spontaneously participated in the anti-CAB protests against Delhi and Dispur.

On Monday, while the Assam bandh called by three students’ organizations was total in the Upper Assam districts, the State Capital city witnessed a series of anti-CAB protests. The situation came to such a pass that the police and security personnel were caught off guard and had a tough time when the protestors from Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) blocked the main entrance to the Janata Bhawan at highly-secure Dispur, and staged anti-CAB protests. During their two-hour-long protest, the AJYCP protestors displayed black flags as well as placards and shouted slogans against those sitting in the corridors of power for their support to the CAB. The police had to arrest a large number of protestors including AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai to bring under control the situation at Janata Bhawan.

On the other hand, students of Gauhati University wrote anti-CAB slogans with their blood at the varsity campus. The ruling BJP and AGP MLAs were gheraoed at several places in the State by the anti-CAB protestors. Dispur MLA (BJP) Atul Bora was gheraoed in his own constituency.

Meanwhile, sources have said that the administration and police have intensified security arrangements across the State in view of the 11-hour North East bandh call against the CAB on Tuesday.

AASU chief advisor Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya said the people have no other option but to carry out agitation against the CAB to assert their rights and safeguard the identity of the indigenous people of Assam. “The people of Assam will give a fitting reply to those bringing CAB to protect illegal Bangladeshis,” Bhattacharya said.
