1,07,875 indigenous people will get land rights: Minister Jogen Mohan

GUWAHATI: Altogether 1,07,875 land pattas and land-allotment certificates are ready for distribution to indigenous landless people across 32 districts of the State. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch this phase of the process from Jerengapathar in Sibsagar town on January 23.

While households having pattas gain settlement rights over their respective land, the people having land-allotment certificates become eligible to apply for land pattas only after three years.

Giving the details, Revenue & Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan told The Sentinel, "There were approximately 5.75 lakh landless indigenous people in Assam when the BJP-led government took over the reins of power. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had directed the Department to provide land rights to the eligible landless indigenous people of the State. The department took up the target-based survey on a mission mode with help from the Deputy Commissioners, Sub Divisional Officers (Civil), and Circle Officers.

"Since 2016 till date, we have distributed land pattas and allotment certificates to 2.28 lakh families. This is an achievement for the government. The remaining eligible people will also get the land pattas and land-allotment certificates in a phased manner.

"This is for the first time since Independence that so many indigenous people have been getting land rights. The Assam government is happy that on the request of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Prime Minister Narendra Modiji has agreed to launch the next phase of the distribution process of land pattas and allotment certificates."

Referring to the targeted 1,07,875 beneficiaries this time, department sources informed that while 40,600 households will be distributed land pattas and 67,275 households will get the land-allotment certificates.

The 10 districts having more than 5,000 beneficiaries are: Dibrugarh (8,217) followed by Jorhat (8,010); Golaghat (7,173); Lakhimpur (7,153); Dhemaji (6,502); Majuli (6,449); Karbi Anglong (5,700); Sibsagar (5,515); Tinsukia (5,276); and Sonitpur (5,000). Altogether 1,425 beneficiaries have been also shortlisted for this phase of the process.
