GUWAHATI: As many as 16,576 cases have been registered under the Motor Vehicles Act in Assam in connection with violation of various traffic rules in the two-and-a-half-month period between January and March 15, 2022. An amount of Rs 15,59,24,100 has been collected by way of fines during this period.
According to Transport Department sources, overall almost one lakh such cases have been registered in the State between January, 2019 and March 15 this year. The total amount of fines collected in connection with 98,790 cases since 2019 is Rs 87,68,16,432.
In 2019, only 1221 cases of traffic rules violation were registered in the State, yielding fines worth Rs 1,24,60,300. In 2020, cases increased almost 20-fold with 20,468, yielding fines worth Rs 17,33,32,502. In 2021, there were 60,525 cases of violation of traffic rules, yielding fines worth Rs 53,50,99,530.
In comparison to Assam, neighbouring Meghalaya has registered only 4,297 cases of traffic rule violation so far this year. When it comes to 2022, Manipur has registered a paltry 17 such cases and Mizoram has registered 525 cases. However, Tripura has registered 7,180 such cases in two-and-a-half months this year.
